Battle Royale games aren’t the easiest games to play. Even the most seasoned players can go through spells where nothing seems to work for them. That’s just the nature of these sorts of games. Apex Legends by Respawn is just as challenging as the average Battle Royale game— but it’s also a lot more than that.

If you’ve not heard of it  -although that is unlikely – Apex Legends is a free-to-play Battle Royale game that was developed by ReSpawn Arts and Published by EA. The game was released for Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox 1 in 2019.

Ever seen its release, Apex Legends has become one of the most popular games in the world of gaming. That’s a big deal, given that five years ago, almost no one knew about the Battle Royale Genre. Now, Apex Legends terms like “Winner winner chicken dinner” have become part of pop culture. There’s no doubt that the game has been immensely successful.

But is it any good? Would it be worth your time? Or is it living on a sad lifeline of hype? Let’s find out.

The Story Is One Of A Kind

There are very few games known for spinning a captivating story. That’s why it’s such a surprise that Apex Legends’ storytelling isn’t just bearable— it’s good, like cinema quality good. So good that following the story itself is. . . Interesting. Not flat, not bearable— interesting!

Each character has an exciting and fun backstory that you want to follow, but ReSpawn still manages to weave a bit of mystery into them. By taking time to define each character and building their place in this world, ReSpawn makes sure that you care what happens to them, and that they aren’t just another avatar you use to beat people up on the internet. Interestingly, each player plays according to their backstory. Revenant, for example, loves killing, and his movements show that clearly.

The great thing about the story is that it started small— and then, through updates, the world started to build until every player became very invested in what happened to their characters.

The story picks off from where Titanfall 2, another game from ReSpawn, stops. At the end of Titanfall 2, there was something called the Frontier Wars, a catastrophic war between colonists of a collection of planets in the farthest reach of our solar system and Their overlords.

Many Apex Legends are survivors of this war, and therein lies their varied and complex backstories. The events of Apex Legends take place on the farthest reach of Frontier called the Outlands. After the Frontier Wars, The Syndicate, a Mysterious group, revitalized a blood sport known as the Apex Legends— and that’s where all the fun takes place.

With each update, a new character with an interesting backstory is added to the roster, and the newest of those characters is a fighter simply known as Loba. The Loba character is interesting because even before she was introduced, we already knew a bit of her backstory, so it was easy to get emotionally attached to her. She isn’t just a random character added to the roster for no reason. That’s a great departure from the randomize-characters-and-let-them-figure-it-out approach that most other games take. No. Apex Legends is a lot more intentional with its story.

Gameplay Is As Good As It Can Get

The guns are responsive, have their personality, and look cool. The game auto equips very satisfactorily, so you don’t have to scan through. Of course, you can choose your guns by yourself, but Apex can also choose for you, and auto equips you with the best gear in your inventory.

Since Apex Legends is a Battle Royale game, communication is vital. And the game delivers excellently with the satisfying Ping system that allows you to draw attention to enemies, items, locations, and objects that your squadmates may want to say. This makes it easier to communicate with squadmates, and if used well, can make playing with total strangers just as fun as playing with friends.

The game also has near-unlimited movement capacity. You can interact with almost any object— you want to climb? You’ll climb. Do you want to move? You’ll move. It doesn’t matter what you want to do; your avatar can do it. Importantly, each legend changes your view of the game and gives you a fresh perspective to play with. That keeps the game ever fresh to most people’s eyes.

The World Is Amazing

The Apex Island is a wonder, even by the very high standards of video games. It has jutting cliffs, clusters of buildings, huge skeletons, and other amazing things that you may just be contented with moving through the world. The game manages to render an arena that is so ridiculously large and still so crowded at the same time that no matter your preference, you will enjoy playing in this world.

The Monetisation Isn’t Bad.

Most games today are pay-to-win— which means you can just about unlock anything by buying it. That isn’t true for Apex Legends. The game is pretty much the standard play-to-win model, and you can unlock nearly every item through gameplay.

Lastly, the game’s updates are consistent and are always adding something interesting to the gameplay and generally make the game better.

Verdict

Apex Legends is as good as any Battle Royale-style game has a right to be. The characters are solid, the lore is amazing, the gameplay is near flawless, and the world is incredible. There’s almost no downside to this game. If you haven’t tried it, you should.
