First released for the PlayStation 5 and Microsoft Windows in November 2020, Godfall is an action role-playing game published by Gearbox Publishing. Godfall is available for download on PS5, Microsoft Windows, and most recently, PS4, released in August 2021.
Godfall is a next-gen action looter video game set in a high fantasy setting in which realms are grouped into three natural elements: earth, air, and water. Players are a part of the exalted Knight’s order as one of its last Valorian warriors. The world created in Godfall draws inspiration from notable literary works in its genre, including the Foundation Series, the Monster Hunt series, and the Stormlight Archive. The gameplay features many weapons and strikes combo concepts from previous genres, including the God of War and the Monster Hunt series.
Godfall is majorly developed for thrill-seeking players who do not mind a fast-paced action game. It features intriguing legendary armor, weapons, and missions against the fiercest foes that are sure to keep you at the edge of your seat.
Godfall is a very amusing loot-based hack-and-slash video game that impresses with its extensive armory and loadout choice. The story behind the game also interests you; meanwhile, the beautiful design and gameplay work to keep you hooked.
Gameplay
Godfall chronicles the turbulent journey of the last Valorian Knights as they wage war against their foes. Set in the fantasy world of Aperion, the player takes the role of one of the previous warriors with god-like powers that give them the ability to wield their mystical armor plates called Valor Plates. The Valorplates bestows unconquerable combat skills to whoever wields them, making them unstoppable and nearly unbeatable.
Warriors can venture across exotic terrains tearing through their foes. The Crimson Glades and Alluvial Plains of the Earth Realm, the Cobalt Caldera and Leviathans Rest of the Water Realm, to the Azure Enclave of the Air Realm — Godfall offers a unique gameplay mechanism to get immersed in.
Godfall proves to be an enjoyable game before the feeling of repetition starts to seep in. I appreciated the combat system,m which was still fun and filled with varieties, although much too similar to that of God of Was. Godfall has a healthy enough mix of all-too-familiar features with some easily identifiable novel additions.
The Fate of Aperion Rests On Your Shoulders
Godfall begins with a rushed introduction to your story. As one of the last Valorian knights, you are involved in a severe battle with Macros’ fallen brother and a fallen king called Orin. The opening reveals that Macros devised a plot to turn all the brothers of the order against each other while seeking forbidden glory by becoming a god.
The warriors descended into chaos, going to battle against each other. Macros challenged the primary player to a fight and seemingly won. You then resurrect not long after, ready to bring down Macros from his tyrannical path to forbidden god status.
At first, I found the quests to be an engaging but thinning set up to have the battle to fight simply. It felt like I was sent on threadbare missions with nothing but a rushed info dump after the other, making the entire feel like a culmination of repetitive encounters.
I appreciated that the realms and levels I played were dotted with an impressive variety of enemies to fight and kill, chests to discover, and loot to gather.
I noticed an unmistakable similarity in the gameplay to more notable titles like Destiny and God of War. Still, I was willing to give this next-gen looter a chance. As you travel across realms, embarking on different missions, you get to admire and appreciate the design effort put into Godfall. From the incredible character and enemy design to the equipment and weapon design, Aperion is a world I was willing to stay in and explore. However, the over-the-top bloom lighting was unnecessarily splashed over every aspect of the game.
Missions That Keep You Wanting More
It is hard to deny that Godfall looks excellent. I could already tell that it would be a vibrant and colorful environment to explore. The missions, however, needed a little bit more scrutiny. Throughout each realm, you are provided with a list of locations, each of which is riddled with more than enough missions to keep you engaged for as long as possible. Players will be brought to face several enemies, non-playable characters, and Bosses in every location.
Unlocking The Water Realm
You will fight in the Cobalt Caldera and Leviathans Re in the Water Realm and encounter the sword and shield-wielding realm boss known as Lunara. The first hunt mission you will face is the Sobeku Hunt, in which you are to defeat a bunch of Black Tide enemies and, ultimately, a large alligator-like creature called Sobeku. Other hunts you will encounter in the Water Realm include the Falcius Diarch Hunt, the Thraex Hunt, and finally, the Black Tide Hunt, which provides for defeating a Black Tide Brute and Black Tide Enforcer.
Unlocking The Earth Realm
You will fight in the Crimson Glades Alluvial Plains in the Earth Realm and the Prismatic Falls. The Realm boss for the Earth Realm is Zamora the Far-Seeing, the first of the Macros’ lieutenants that you will face. Hunt Missions include the Alpha Rancor Hunt, the Phalanxar Hunt, the Decimus Hunt, the Infiltrate Vargul Stronghold, and the Black Tide Officer Hunt.
Unlocking The Air Realm
The Air Realm features two realm bosses called Grieves Sunsteel and the Gliden Commander. Locations include the Azure Enclave and the Floating Remnant, while hunt missions include the Black Tide Enforcer Hunt, the Sunflare Ravager Hunt, the Excelsious Hunt, and the Nyak Summoner Hunt. At the end of missions, you would have collected tons of rewards, including sigils, coins of courage, and motherlodes.
Weapons to Tear Down The Enemies
Godfall has an overly impressive armory of over 100 weapons divided into five weapon classes depending on their rarity level: Common, Uncommon, Rare, Epic, Legendary. As the level of rarity increases, so do the powers these weapons bestow upon their wielders. The five types of weapons are Longswords, Polearms, War hammers, Greatswords, and Dual Blades.
