Developed and published by The Side Kicks and Midgar Studio, Edge of Eternity is a single-player role-playing game that follows the adventures of Daryon, a vibrant soldier in a fantasy world who became a deserter. It was released on June 8, 2021, for Windows. The game was later released on February 10, 2022, on PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One, and Series X/S platforms. Finally, Midgar Studio released it on Switch on February 22, 2022.
Family over Duty
As we begin the game (prologue), we see Daryon on duty with his friends, watching an outpost. He then receives a message from Selene, his sister, urging him to come back home and help save their mother. She gets infected with the Corrosion – a deadly disease that could turn her into a zombie weapon as Daryon prepares to return home. Archelites ambushes and kills all his team members leaving Daryon as the only surviving squad member.
Another part of the prologue shows the introduction of Orobos, a mysterious warrior. He tries to give himself some superpowers, and Daryon somehow receives a fraction of the powers. Although we initially don’t know the nature of the power, we get to see them manifest as the game progresses. The game’s storyline may seem confusing when you start playing, but that shouldn’t bother you s more details will unfold eventually.
Journeying Through the Dazzling Open World
When I started playing Edge of Eternity, I first noticed the beautiful environment. The creators perfectly designed everything to mimic the RPG games from the 80s. The vegetation is so beautiful and realistic that it makes you feel like you were suddenly transported to a new world. Every other aspect of the natural environment is just as intriguing and pleasing to the eyes, including the mountains, the hills, the valleys, and even the flowing rivers.
Edge of Eternity involves players exploring the open world to find clues, source herbs, craft materials, and other quests. As you journey through the lands, you will find many beautiful creatures and cities. However, the people of the land are in grave danger and are inflicted with different technological and biological diseases daily.
Fighting Monsters in Different Zones and Levels
There are so many missions and side quests in Edge of Eternity. To complete these missions and quests, you must visit different zones and fight hordes of monsters trying to attack you. There is just so much ground to cover, and some missions were a bit boring when I was alone. It felt so amazing when I finally got a giant double-tailed cat to be my companion. I could ride Nekaroo through the mountain, plains, and valleys without getting bored.
Although their creativity is commendable, there are many instances where the character designers repeated monster designs, only changing their skins and names. The first few levels had epic designs, with each group of monsters having different looks and abilities. Hopefully, we will see some improvements in later versions of the game.
Engaging Battles to Keep You Fighting
This adventurous game has a turn-based battle system that reminds me of the Final Fantasy games. Selene is a devoted spell caster, while your character Daryon is a melee warrior. Fighting is fun when you combine the abilities of these two game characters. During combats, your characters tend to exhaust their gauges. Once the gauges finish, you must wait for them to fill up before you can attack enemies.
Some of your enemies also have different spells they can use against you. When fighting these enemies, you can use specific attacks and abilities to block their spells. However, you should take note that these enemies can also block your spells, which means you must be careful during each attack. Apart from the typical defend and attack combat system in most games, Edge of eternity gives the players specific objectives during each battle. For instance, your goal may be to kill a particular enemy before killing others, hitting the monsters behind, or not taking any damage throughout the battle. You must complete these challenges to earn more loots and money.
Fight Battles on Hex-based Grids
To begin fighting any battle, you must place your character properly. You can move towards any direction on the grid to find the perfect point. You can even have more than one character on the grid, depending on the complex nature of the battle. The game lets you import particular objects to the battle grid, like turrets, plants and portions, traps, or cannons. You will find many more options, especially during boss battles, to help you defeat tough bosses. These options are usually technical, like creating electric surges or forming different barricades by activating specific switches. A great thing about the battle system is that you can fast-forward time during battles if you eventually get tired or bored.
Other Characters and Weapons to Anticipate
Although Edge of Eternity begins with only Daryon and Selene as the only major characters, you will unlock new characters with special abilities as the game progresses. Some of these characters include Fallon, Ysoris, and Theia. Fallon is a sky-based pirate skilled at using different firearms and ammunition, while Ysoris is a machinery expert who could hack systems. Theia, on the other hand, is adept at brutally attacking enemies.
There are so many weapons available in the game. You unlock new weapons after different battles and levels. To maximize your fighting skills, always ensure that you upgrade your weapons. You will also find many crafting options and blueprints to help you create new and advanced weapons.
Conclusion
Edge of Eternity dutifully pays tribute to classic role-playing games with numerous 3D sci-fi themes. If you love fantasy open-world games featuring beasts, tours, magical creations, and spells, you should check out this game. While the scenery immediately depicts a peaceful world with everyone living an idyllic life, the so-called relaxed atmosphere is soon shattered as we begin to see the current reality of the world of Heryon. A planet filled with invading aliens, strange sicknesses, and diseases. It’s up to your character – Daryon – to save his mom and the planet.
