Toon Blast is the new gaming phenomenon in town and has captured the hearts of many young players around the world. The mobile puzzle app, developed by Peak Games, is compatible with android and iOS devices, making them widely available. It was released in 2017 and has become the quintessential toddler pacifier.
I got to know this cute and charming game through its strong community of mums and babysitters. I played it, and I must confess I enjoyed playing it and got addicted for a while. I also noticed a few issues with the game.
The game starts quite easy but quickly becomes challenging and mentally tasking. The challenge of beating a tough stage keeps most players coming back for more.
Straightforward Gameplay That We Are Familiar With
Toon Blast is a puzzle matching game where similar coloured blocks are aligned to result in interesting combos. A great understanding of how puzzle games of this kind work will greatly increase your chances of advancing in the game. The gameplay is somewhat similar to the other popular game candy crush, but it comes with more interesting features and works without the constant chiming and voice-over. Each level comes with a goal and a restricted number of moves.
The goals may vary from clearing a certain number of cubes to breaking a certain number of crates or popping bubbles later in the game. You may have to build up coloured blocks before you break through them. You can unlock whacky boosters, which increase your chances of acing new levels. Using a Disco Ball, for example, helps you to eliminate all the existing balls in the tray, thereby increasing your score. You earn stars by completing levels and winning great rewards.
Special Items And Lives
You begin the game with five lives, and after unsuccessfully passing a level, you lose one. Thankfully, you gain a free life every thirty minutes. When you share a life with your teammate, you get gold for it, and you can collect these stars into a star chest.
Special items are the boosters that amplify your moves. You may get a rocket that destroys five cubes of the same colours, bombs that destroy seven cubes of the same colours, and disco bombs that destroy up to nine or more. You can create an even larger effect when you combine boosters; for example, a disco bomb and a rocket have a lot more impact.
The Amplifiers Add Spice To The Game
Amplifiers simplify the process of completing a level in Toon Blast. There are hammers, boxing gloves, an anvil, and bones. The hammer destroys any cube or obstacle of your choice. The hammer has come in handy many times for me when you have a good combination of cubes, but a single cube obstructs your progress. The boxing glove destroys an entire line of cubes. This comes in handy when you need to refresh the game with a new set of cubes.
You also get to select the line you want to eliminate, which is also cool. The anvil also destroys a selected column of cubes while bones shuffle all the cubes on the screen. Amplifiers can be earned with a fun chest, a star chest, or a daily bonus. You can also unlock them by using money. There are other ways to earn free gold outside the conventional gameplay, such as sharing life with teammates, connecting the game to your Facebook account, opening a cheerful chest, attaining a daily bonus, and when you first join a team.
Happy-Go-Lucky Soundtrack
The nice quirky soundtrack gives the impression that this game was built for children. This is, however, not surprising as the name and graphics indicate who the target audience is. The sound plays continuously in the background.
Basic Yet Intriguing Graphics
The graphics for this game are noticeably simplistic and clean. Icons are colourful and large, with the signature toon in the background at all times. The graphics look a lot like the classic Looney Toons and is calming.
Treasure Chest and Daily Tests
A treasure hunt is an event where you find keys. You keep all the rewards in the treasure chest, and they help you travel through the world of Toon Blast. You obtain keys by passing levels, and you can open the chest once you have up to 20 keys; however, there is a catch. To participate in the Treasure hunt, you must be above level 27; you can only earn a key per level and open only one chest.
The daily test is an event that allows you to win up to 100 coins every day. The tasks change every day, and you must achieve a specific goal to receive the rewards. The different tasks include the missile and bomb test, where you build a specific number of missiles and bombs. There is a Disco test where you also create a specific number of discs. The disco challenge, first attempt test, 3-star challenge, and sea trial are also included.
The Game Is Not Without A Few Issues
The major challenge of Toon Blast is the number of in-app purchases you need to get. As the game progresses, certain levels become so difficult to pass that you have no choice but to spend real-life money. There are quite some ads that pop up and interrupt the gameplay. This is annoying for many people, but it is typical of free games.
Conclusion
In conclusion, Toon Blast provides an exciting game experience enough to keep you occupied for many hours. Toon Blast is a great option if you are a parent who needs to divert your toddlers’ attention for a few hours. It may not be an ideal game for colour-blind players as it is entirely based on connecting colours.
