Getting Started

The game begins with you creating a character. There are plenty of options to choose from in terms of personality, values, and flairs. The biographical components you settle with determine your character’s story. Next is choosing your character’s race, and this dictates where the game will begin. 

The races of Tyria include Asura, Sylvari, Human, Norn, and Charr. Each of these races has a unique story path, and together with your chosen biography, set the stage for your adventure and destiny. You can invite your friends to join in the adventure in open play, but the ball remains in your court.

Gameplay

An integral part of your Guild War 2 story is fighting the Elder Dragons, and that you can’t do alone. Groups like Durmand Priory, the Order of Whispers, and Vigil are there to help, and you must combine forces with one. From the home of your race, you’ll move through different parts of Tyria, exploring legends until you arrive at the nation of Orr.

Guild Wars offers an easy-to-learn competitive play – either in a Player vs. Player (PvP) or World vs. World (WvW) battle. In PvP matches, you jump into short matches to carry out some objectives or kick out opponents. Join the PvP leagues to test your skills in a team of five against another set of players. With every character adjusted to maximum levels, victory depends on how well you can leverage your abilities.

In WvW, players enjoy the frenzy of a large-scale battle involving three terrific armies, which must battle for domination and power. Your level is turned to max, but you can only use the skills you’ve acquired before that level. So it’s better to first master skills in the PvP matches before venturing into this epic battle.

Professions that Fit Your Style

What’s your style? How do you like to play? Guild Wars 2 gives you eight different professions to choose from. These professions have unique attacking prowess and abilities, giving you an array of options to explore. You can either be a Mesmer, Guardian, Necromancer, Ranger, Warrior, Elementalist, Thief, or Engineer.

As a Mesmer, you have lots of magic in your hand to execute your deceptive powers. Distort the enemies’ perceptual experiences with incredible delusions and hallucinatory episodes to earn a victory. If you love to gain victory through brilliant tactics and impenetrable defenses, go with the Guardian profession.  

I particularly enjoyed being the Necromancer. It was fascinating how I could easily summon minions to serve as allies and perform stupendous dark arts demonstrations. More intriguing is the fact that I could stay alive for longer by scavenging on my enemies. In my second play-through, I chose to revel in the spell-casting powers of the Elementalist. I could make air, fire, water, and air do just anything I like.

Rangers are built to survive even the harshest of conditions, but not without the help of their sharp vision, stamina, and nature itself. The Warrior is strong, ruthless, and doesn’t easily crack. They get increasingly deadly the longer they fight, making for good warriors – as the name suggests. As a Thief, there’s enough acrobatic displays and agility to avoid being thumped. The Engineer‘s sleeve is full of hazards and mechanical catastrophe. Bombs, grenades, mines, and dangerous weaponry make up the profession’s rich arsenal.

While each profession presents you with a unique set of traits, they all pass for skillful combatants. There’s an enemy to attack, blows to evade, and allies that need you as a savior. All of these combine to elicit the array of weaponry and skill-set that makes combat high-impact and quick. 

The more battles you fight, the stronger and more versatile you become. As you deploy your skills in Tyria’s battle-filled world, the more skills and weaponry you attract. So there’s no time to hide under the shell: heroism is yours for the taking. You can choose to fight alone or combine your skills with your friends’ in open play.

Channel the fire element to break through an enemy’s defense; create illusions to deceive an opponent, and use your skills to heal a hit ally.
