WORLD OF WARCRAFT

Since its first release in 2004, I’ve played every edition of World of Warcraft. Without any reservation, this enthralling MMORPG has only gotten better – with every single release. Last time, it was the grueling episodes of Battle for Azeroth. The recent version, World of Warcraft Classic, offers even more demanding but enjoyable challenge.

While there’s a bit of nostalgia to deal with, World Warcraft’s latest release does spring up some surprises. Its role-playing system and stimulating combat make the game excitingly unique. You’d be treading on a time-bomb if you’re unsuspecting of the dangers that sit right around the corner. Yes, the challenge can be daunting, but isn’t that where the fun lies?

Set in the mythical Warcraft realm, World of Warcraft is a 3D fantasy game, highly considered the MMORPG genre standard. With an immersive user gaming experience filled with enthralling quests, reactive combats, and captivating raids, World of Warcraft is a must-play game.

Gameplay

World of Warcraft allows you to be whoever you want to be – a horror-spinning magician or a bellicose fighter. It starts from the race you choose, and unlike other RPGs, no race is exclusively good or evil. There’s a mix of heroes and villains in both the Alliance and Horde races.

The Alliance consists of Human, Gnome, Dwarf, Draenei, Worgen, Pandaren, and Knight Elf – each with unique abilities. Driven by tradition, they are devoted defenders of the peace and integrity of the kingdom of Azeroth. On the other side are Troll, Orc, Tauren, Undead, Blood Elf, Goblin, and Forsaken, making up the Horde race. They pitch their tent with unity and freedom and deal ruthlessly with anything that threatens that ideal.

The race and class you choose will determine your path in the game. While some classes come with some extra benefits, they all possess incredible combat abilities and special powers to pull through every quest.  The game moves at the speed of a heartbeat with a smooth transition between every objective.

From a small, likely inconsequential base, your journey begins. You’re likely to start with small tasks like collecting objects and bashing items. These missions don’t take forever, as you are soon moved to a larger circle with more significant tasks. One hour, you’re a pro at picking objects, the next hour, you have a problem to solve in a small town. Alongside that, there are many side-quests to engage in – not without rewards, though. As soon as you ascend the throne of mastery at that level, a bigger objective comes knocking at the door. Now, you’re in a much bigger town with a bigger bone to chew. The game moves up higher and higher until you give up on predicting your destiny.

This potential of growth is what makes World of Warcraft particularly addictive. There’s an opportunity to grow with the story, filling more prominent roles, and heralding more daring adventures. Although the game is fast-paced, it doesn’t, for one bit, push you hurriedly out of the door. You’re allowed to make mistakes, and your health comes right back up faster than most similar games. When you realize that death isn’t necessarily the only punishment for errors, there’s more courage to face the challenge head-on.

Engage in Adventurous Missions

World of Warcraft strikes a perfect balance with single-player and multiplayer modes. There are many missions you can carry out on your own. However, for some missions, stepping on the warzone alone is walking right into Hell. Some tasks require the help of friends to attain triumph. Scattered all over the game are different groups gathering to deal with a bigger challenge, and joining them will offer some thrill.

The quests are usually a mix of combat and collection – but with far complicated twists than you’d expect. Again, the way I could easily immerse myself in the storylines was incredible. Playing as a human mage, I landed in a mix of family row dotted with rancor and, unsurprisingly, romance. The unpredictability of the story and how it blends with your mission is awesome.

The game has over a thousand quests waiting for you, with available quests popping up as you step into a new zone. Sometimes, these quests can feel overwhelming but knowing they’d wait till you are ready offers some comfort. In fact, you can’t have more than 20 waiting quests at a time. However, these pressing tasks are the very bane of World of Warcraft’s thrill.

Set in the land of Azeroth, this game takes you through many awe-inspiring scenes and spectacular landscapes. Exploration on foot is quite enjoyable, even though it’s only a matter of time before you discover faster ways to move around.

World of Warcraft: More than Questing

Quests are not all there is to World of Warcraft. There are many Player vs. Player (PvP) fights to keep your adrenaline pumping. These combats are entertaining, with the characters’ unique abilities coming into play. You can choose to engage in simple duels with other players – all for nothing but fun. If you more of the bloodthirsty type, then you can go all out for lethal combat.

On both the Player vs. Player (PvP) and Player vs. Environment (PvE) servers, there are zones where any player can engage in combat with other players. Battlegrounds, for example, allow a defined number of players to fight with one another to accomplish an objective. The winner gets tokens and honor badges as rewards.

Final Verdict

Mystery fascinates me, so does adventure in its rawest form. Thankfully, World of Warcraft offers both – and even more – in a seamless manner. A playthrough is replete with lots of fun, and Blizzard has managed to keep up with the game’s originality.  I’m not sure of so many things in life, but I’m quite sure I’ll be playing World of Warcraft for a long time to come.

The bad
  • Non-intuitive mechanics here and there, but not so much to ruin a player’s gaming experience
