The name Marvel sparks excitement in the minds of millions around the world. Imagine how excited I was to get into this new Marvel Contest of Champions. Developed by Kabam Games Inc., this is a freemium mobile game that comes in multiple languages and is compatible with all Apple-enabled devices and android devices.
Upon its release, many people called it the Marvel version of ‘Justice,’ but I think it is more than that. The game gives a new plot distinct from what we know in the existing multiverse and sets up the villains and the heroes as equals.
A New Plot To The Game
The game opens in a world controlled by the collector, and you take the role of the summoner tasked to assemble a group of great heroes for the contest of champions. You proceed to select your characters at random and launch straight into the game. Before every match, you also get a short summary of what is going on and why you’re fighting your next opponent or group.
New quests and events are being introduced every time, which elevates the game’s basic plot. New fighters are introduced at different levels, and new characters instill a freshness into the game.
Exciting Gameplay With Great Action Moves
The first thing I noticed was that the gameplay is quite dynamic. It starts off simple and increases in complexity as you progress through the ranks. This makes it very enjoyable for newcomers or casual gamers because they can ease into it. Usually, when other action games begin, the characters are standing still like a boxing contest waiting for the bell to go off.
However, the characters in this game charge toward each other in Marvel fashion and get right to it, which plunges you into the action head-on. I found the game a little too simplistic for extreme gamers like me because there is a limit to the complexity of combos that you can inflict on the opponent. It is a basic swiping game with easy controls: tap for quick attacks, swipe for dash attacks, and hold down to block. Although a few characters have their special combo that works great, and I especially love the strength of Wolverine, Venom, and Captain Marvel’s knock-out moves.
Wide Variety Of Gameplay Modes
When in this game, you have various modes to choose from. You can opt for the story quest, which takes you down different acts and chapters where you meet and battle different opponents for rewards. In single-player mode, you can either do event quests which are daily battles where you win loots, or a Versus battle where you compete with other online players. There is also the arena mode, where you can play without considering the quest meter or other factors.
The multiplayer mode also has different options where you can form an alliance of three heroes with other online players and battle another group. You can go on quests together and help each other gain points, crystals, and loyalty points. There is also a wide variety of costumes and locations to fight at. Some of my favorite locations include the S.H.I.E.L.D. Hellicarriers, Oscorp, Avengers Tower, Wakanda, Asgard, etc. You can also use one of three currencies, namely ISO-8 currency, class-specific, gold, or actual cash. All of these locked into a single mobile game is simply amazing.
Marvel Quality Graphics All The Way
The game’s opening sequence gives a taste of the quality of graphics to expect in this game. The graphics are so great and smooth that they are arguably too good for a mobile game. You are allowed to destroy some of the iconic locations as you fight. One noticeable thing about the graphics for Marvel’s Contest of Champions is that the characters look nothing like the actors who play them in the movies. They stayed true to the comic book appearance of these heroes, which was refreshing.
For the people who got introduced to the characters on the big screens, this would be a jarring experience, but much less so for comic book fans. The graphics team did a good job at building an immersive world. They also gave the characters distinct fighting styles, making the game less monotonous. Wolverine’s fighting poise and moves are different from Venom or Hulk Buster, which was great.
Amazing Soundtrack That Keeps The Blood Pumping
The soundtrack attached to the game is quite immersive. It does not quite come close to the actual avenger’s theme soundtrack, but it is great in itself. It combines the elements of suspense and is still consistent with the dark theme that seems to permeate the entire game.
Also, little sounds like the arena destruction when a character crashes into it work nicely with the graphics. There are also some fight moves and kicks that remind you of the movies. That is how close to reality they are.
The User Experience Is Less Than Perfect
As expected from a freemium mobile game, certain quests, characters, coupons, and game currency can only be unlocked with actual cash. The real bone of contention is that even when you pay for a new character, you don’t control what character you get. However, it is important to note that you can complete the campaigns without using in-game purchases, even though it upgrades your experience.
There are also in-game ads that show up from time to time that may be annoying to many players. The user interface is also quite buggy, especially in the android versions, which can ruin the game experience. I have also experienced network errors, even though my Wi-Fi worked perfectly. There are other issues with replenishing strength and healing of the updates. The waiting time can be long and frustrating.
Conclusion
In conclusion, this is an entertaining mobile game that you can play almost anywhere. It has set itself apart as one of the best comic book-based games out there. It is also suitable for young players as it does not have the gore factor of many action games. The consistent introduction of new quests and events has maintained the game’s freshness.
