We Were Here Forever, the fourth game of the co-op puzzle series, We Were Here, was released on 10th May 2022. The We Were Here series by Total Mayhem Studios came into the mainstream with its first release on 3rd February 2017 and has become a thrilling adventure for fans and gamers. The game’s release was impressive for the series and co-op puzzle games.
We Were Here Forever is preceded by We Were Here (2017), We Were Here Too (2018), and We Were Here Together (2019). This fourth installation in the series was published on Steam, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series S.
The co-operative first-person adventure puzzle game involves two players stuck in the bodies of two nameless explorers. They are trapped in different places and are unaware of the reason behind their captivity. Nonetheless, they must play as partners and try to solve puzzles to escape.
What Is It About?
The storyline is mysterious and captivating and features you (the game’s protagonist) and your partner. The game begins with you two trapped in different cells deep within Castle Rock. You are both oblivious of how you got there or how to get out. Regardless, you have to work together to get out of the castle and, in doing so, unlock many mysteries.
To escape, you and your partner must explore Castle Rock for puzzles and plan your escape together. Nothing is what it seems in this menacing castle, and if you are not careful, you and your partner may be trapped in it forever.
Escaping Castle Rock is not a piece of cake, as there is more to the game on every level. For instance, freeing yourself from your cells and escaping the keep is only the beginning. There are enticing mysteries to discover. Outside the keep, you will get to learn a lot about the game’s history and some key characters. Learning the story of Rockbury, the town surrounding Castle Rock, its dwellers, and the details of a resistance formed against the king was more exciting than I imagined.
We Were Here Forever: So Far So Good
We Were Here Forever is an incredible puzzle game that I have become very fond of over the last few weeks. I love the entire idea behind the series. I love the teamwork it inspires, alongside features like graphics and art design. It is also beautiful to know that there is a connection in each story of the four series that makes you feel like you are living in a world where you are in control of everything.
However, this interconnection does not stop first-timers from enjoying the game. Though the stories are continuations of their prequels, each plot is well developed to tell a story that seems independent yet keeps you up to date with the events of the previous games.
A Gameplay Full of Mysteries and Excitement
We Were Here Forever is an adventure full of mysteries to unravel. These mysteries keep drawing me in, alongside every other aspect. I love teamwork, communication, and observation, all of which are fully packaged in this incredible game. In fact, the whole package is just mind-blowing.
To play Forever successfully, you must communicate clearly with your partner. However, there is a twist here: you can’t see your partner, which could sometimes feel like you are interacting with a ghost. On the bright side, you can communicate effectively through your walkie-talkies. The gameplay mechanics are also very well done, making it easy for players to get sucked into the game world and forget about everything else around them.
Teamwork is Everything
The We Were Here series is a co-op puzzle game series, and the latest release is no exception. There are so many options for partner selection. You could leverage random matchmaking to get partners or play with your friends. I enjoy playing with friends online, but the matchmaking system is also fun and engaging.
If you get lucky and find someone online who is into escape rooms and asymmetrical puzzles like you, it would be a fun and much better experience. Although We Were Here Forever could give you that uneasy feeling of being helpless sometimes, partnering with others in the co-op makes it easier. It also helps you focus on different strategies to help you and your partner escape.
Deep Puzzles to Keep You Glued
The puzzles take the spotlight as they are a significant part of the game. Most people are in for the puzzle and adventure, as am I, but I am also in for the story and the bonding with my partner. It is always an incredible experience to solve problems with them.
Although the puzzles are not easy, your victory after each level makes every struggle worth it. Through these puzzles, you and your partner are tested for different qualities: your communication, teamwork, and observation skills.
Another interesting part for me is when you are split from your partner. You can’t see what they are seeing, and you each have to find separate pieces of information. When you reunite, you and your partner have to fix the pieces you each found when you were apart. The puzzles can be frustrating if you don’t fancy challenges. But for me, it was absolute fun.
Conclusion
Total Mayhem Games have done an excellent job with We Were Here Forever, which is worthy of a thumbs up and drum rolls. I love the adventure, the mystery, and the drill the puzzles give. It is a fast-paced, strategic game that requires quick thinking, effective planning, and cooperation. If you enjoy co-op games or mysteries, you will most likely enjoy this one.
