Diablo Immortal came out a while ago, and I’ve been trying to spend as much time as possible with the game so I can talk about it better. However, Diablo Immortal is not just a simple linear experience but a creative and unforgettable addition to the Diablo game series.
Diablo Immortal is a massively multiplayer online action RPG. The game is free to play and open to all. Developed by Blizzard Entertainment and NetEase, this latest installment in the Diablo series is set between the events of Diablo II and Diablo III. Players control a character of their chosen class – Barbarian, Wizard, Monk, Necromancer, Demon Hunter, or Crusader – who must locate and destroy hidden shards of the Worldstone to prevent Skarn, the Lord of Damnation, from destroying the world of Sanctuary.
Time to Turn on the Hero Mode
Immortal is set between Diablo II’s events and Diablo III’s, shedding light on the happenings that took place during that time. Archangel Tyrael is presumed dead, and humans are left to pick up the pieces of his destruction. However, darkness again descends upon the land as Diablo’s friends search for the pieces of the destroyed earth stone. Humanity is again drawn into a struggle to save itself, and it’s up to you, the player, to collect all the debris and destroy it.
You will start the game by creating and naming your character. As usual, there are six classes to choose from – Barbarian, Wizard, Demon Hunter, Monk, Crusader, and Necromancer – each with its own set of skills and special abilities, so you can choose what best suits your play style. I’m elementary, so I went with Crusader. You can’t go wrong with a long word. Once you choose your class, you can change your character’s hair, skin colour, and other features to your liking and give them a name (mine is Kaya).
After creating your character, you’re launched straight into the game, taking a small boat to what looks like a completely deserted beach. There are so many activities in the game, but they don’t get boring because they were all designed to be short. You can complete any activity in Diablo Immortal within five to fifteen minutes.
Multiplayer Games Just Got Better
Diablo Immortal is an MMORPG, the kind of game that would get players talking for hours. The game features simple hack-and-slash combat that is well-suited for mobile devices, and the skills and weapons you equip turn your character into an absolute boss. You can catalogue all the weapons and tools you find and keep the gems for bonuses.
Outstanding Design and Background
The story of Diablo Immortal was very entertaining. I didn’t pay much attention to the story for most MMOs I’ve played, picking up bits and pieces along the lines. I was more interested in rushing into missions to level up and join my friends at the top ranks. But to enjoy the most of Diablo Immortal, I am immersed in all the details. Even my character’s inner monologues are fully voiced, ensuring I didn’t miss a single detail. Usually, games like this are only designed with a large dialogue box that the player can read. Of course, it’s easier and probably cheaper in terms of development, but it’s not practical. Hence, the effort and detail that went into this game aspect are commendable.
You might want to use a touchscreen device to get the most out of Diablo Immortal. The game features virtual controls around the display, a directional thumb stick, and some buttons. The system allows auto-aim for the closest enemies. You could use a good gamepad if you don’t have a touchscreen device. The game also supports the use of a mouse and keyboard.
Exploring the Elder and Challenge Rifts
There is plenty you can do to gain some much-needed experience. Of course, you can go out and take down mobs or do side quests, but Diablo Immortal also has interesting dungeon-like events – Elder Rifts and Challenge Rifts.
Elder Rifts are replayable dungeons where you can use different rocks to change Rift rewards, rarely giving higher rewards. You also get Fading Embers after completing a run, which you can then trade at the merchant for runes used to craft legendary gems for your weapon.
On the other hand, Challenge Rift levels up after each successful completion, getting harder and harder as you progress. Both Rifts can be run solo or with a party in a ‘role’ format, meaning you and your party are the only people entering your Rift, so you don’t have to compete with mobs and loot that way. In each Rift, your goal is to take down the Rift Guardian as quickly as possible to increase your rewards and climb the Rift leaderboard.
You Could Choose to Go Solo or Play With Friends
Immortal can be played solo or co-op. You can hang out with people in Rifts and those on the same battle line as you, but you can also create or join a Warband. A Warband is a group of up to 8 people who play together regularly, like a guild or alliance, but smaller. Being in a Warband allows the player to take on Helliquary bosses for rank rewards and gives members a 5% higher chance to drop items from monsters while having fun together. There is also a Warband Storage Box where members can borrow one item at a time.
Conclusion
Immortal looks absolutely stunning, even on mobile, and I’ve had a lot of fun playing it so far. I can’t wait to continue the trip. Who knows, maybe now I’ll play other Diablo games. It’s also worth noting if you log into your BattleNet account while playing on mobile, your progress will be saved. It can be quickly retrieved using a computer, making the game easy to pick up anytime, anywhere. The gameplay is smooth and impressive, and the voice work is superb. Besides hating the ‘grind,’ this is my new MMO experience!
