Originally released in 1982, the Evil Dead franchise has become a cult classic thanks to its blend of horror and comedy and its freewheeling use of blood and gore. The franchise’s latest incarnation, with features like infinite lives and cut scenes inspired by the film series’ distinctive visual style, Evil Dead: The Game takes what made the movies so great and makes them fun to experience in a new way. 

This 2022 survival horror game was developed and published by Saber Interactive. The game is available on various platforms like PS 4 and 5, MS Windows, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X and Series S. 

A Survival Horror Game with a Difference

The Evil Dead series has always been a favorite of mine. I was ecstatic when I found out they were making a video game based on the first three films. It would be like being able to play through all my favorite moments from the films that I grew up on and loved. Since its announcement in 2021, I couldn’t wait to explore what it would feel like to play Evil Dead: The Game, a franchise story that has been twisted into a game. 

In Evil Dead: The Game, players take on the role of Ash Williams, a man who has been trapped in an abandoned cabin with demons. Players must fight through hordes of demonic enemies and solve puzzles to escape and save their friends. Ash can use various weapons against his undead foes, including firearms and melee weapons like chainsaws or axes. Unlike most survival horrors, Evil Dead: The Game adds more spice to the mix by allowing players to take on the villain role. Although I loved playing Ash, the villain role was exciting. 

What Kind of Player Are You?

Do you want to be a hero, or do you prefer playing through the eyes of a villain? Do you want to play Ash or one of his friends from the original films? Or would you rather take control of another character for an entirely new perspective on this iconic horror franchise? Each player will have their own unique experience with Evil Dead: The Game, which lets players choose how they want to play.

When you start the game, you’ll be given the option to either play as Ash and follow a linear path through the game’s story or switch sides and control one of his undead victims to hunt down our beloved protagonist and make him suffer.

Join Ash as he battles his way through cabin fever and hordes of deadites to save himself and his friends from being turned into one of them. Fight your way out of an undead nightmare while playing as an over-the-top version of the film’s hero — or alternatively, play at night as one of Ash’s possessed former comrades. Play with up to three other players online or offline and survive on or offline coop mode! Players collect items they can use throughout the game to create new weapons with unique properties.

Customizing Your Character, Building Resources, and Finding Weapons 

Players can customize their characters by choosing from four different archetypes, which allows them to choose what skills they would like their character to have. Resources can be gathered through exploration and looting other players, which will help build a safe house for yourself and your friends. Weapons are found throughout the world and include shotguns, chainsaws, Molotov cocktails, and more. Players also need to keep themselves alive with medicine, or else they will become one of the undead as well. 

The gameplay features activities like scavenging supplies, food, and water to make it out of the woods alive. Players can also search abandoned houses to find something valuable (a risky but profitable venture). Other activities include hunting animals for meat and looking out for traps laid by evil forces before entering buildings.

Crafting Deadly Items is a Pastime for Horror-Adventure Gamers 

If you’re a fan of the franchise, then you’ll know that one of the signature items in all of the movies is a chainsaw. That’s why we knew it would be a must-have for the game! With their brand new Chainsaw and Electric Chainsaw weapons, players can slice and dice their way through hordes of terrifying enemies. Plus, with the expansive array of melee weapons available throughout the game world, players are sure to find something they like, from baseball bats to shovels. 

But beware, because some of these items can also be weapons against you (i.e., a rake). And don’t forget the explosive traps scattered around the world to help keep those pesky deadites at bay. Whether your preferred strategy is running and gunning or stealthily moving from room to room, taking out undead ghouls one by one, there’s a weapon style for everyone in Evil Dead: The Game.

It’s All About Adrenalin Rush and Blood Lust

Be wary of where you go and what you do. In this game, every environment is hostile and will kill you if you’re not careful. – If a battle starts, do your best to use all five melee weapons in your inventory. You never know when or where the next combat situation will come up. – Use items wisely! Items can be combined with other objects for various effects, such as combining nails with a tape deck for an impromptu booby trap. 

Be mindful of your ammo! It’s tempting to spray bullets at anything that moves, but ensure you have enough ammo before taking on tougher enemies. As always, aim for their heads (or chests) for maximum damage. Finally, get used to stealth tactics; sometimes, it’s easier and safer than going head-to-head against enemies. Evil Dead: The Game takes players deep into a dark story full of horrific moments and scares. I was glad to witness iconic scenes from the movie series in this immersive first-person action-adventure video game. 

A New and Exciting Experience Wrapped Up in Good Old Memories

Players can relive their favorite moments in the movies or experience them for the first time as they roam an eerie cabin looking for clues to unravel what’s happened before they are abruptly knocked out. When they wake up, they find themselves in different environments where deadites prowl and wait to prey on those who don’t survive long enough for Ash or his sister Cheryl to arrive. If that weren’t creepy enough, there are also ominous figures lurking around corners and objects popping up unexpectedly. 

It doesn’t matter how often you watch Evil Dead, as long as Bruce Campbell’s Ash makes it out alive, right? That’s not the case in Evil Dead: The Game, though. You can play as Ash or one of his friends and get blasted, attacked, tortured, or possessed in any number of ways in this mobile-centric action game. 

Conclusion 

Look no further if you are looking for a good, old-fashioned, zombie-slashing, head-chopping, gore-spattering horror game. That said, it may not be for those that are faint at heart or easily offended by violence against the living and the dead. Evil Dead: The Game features these and more. Evil Dead: The Game is a full package of fun, action, adventure, and thrills.
